Bali Timur - Stripe

You wake to soft light filtering through linen curtains, the hum of motorbikes already weaving through the lanes outside. The bed is low and wide, dressed in crisp white cotton that smells faintly of sun and detergent. You pad barefoot across the cool concrete floor to the kitchen, where you boil water in the copper kettle and prepare coffee using beans from a local roastery. Breakfast happens on the terrace, feet dangling in the plunge pool, a papaya sliced open on the table beside you.

Mid-morning is for wandering. You pull on sandals and step into the street, navigating the network of narrow lanes that connect this part of Denpasar. A vendor sells fresh coconuts from a cart; you buy one and drink it leaning against a temple wall. By noon the heat has thickened, so you return to the villa, rinse off in the rain shower, and settle into the daybed with a book. The ceiling fan turns slowly overhead. Time moves differently here.

Afternoon stretches long and quiet. You might work at the teak dining table, the laptop plugged into the high-speed fibre connection, or you might do nothing at all. The golden stripe on the far wall catches the changing light, turning amber, then ochre, then bronze. Around five, you slip into the pool again, floating on your back, watching palm fronds sway against the sky.

Evening arrives with a cooler breeze. You dress and walk to a nearby warung for grilled fish and sambal, or you cook at home, chopping lemongrass and chillies on the wooden board. Dinner is simple, eaten slowly, accompanied by a cold beer from the fridge. Later, you sit outside under the stars, listening to the chorus of frogs and distant temple bells, feeling the day settle into your bones.
